Die Singles "Longview", "Basket Case" und "When I Come Around" kennt fast jeder. Mit dem Hit "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" bekam Green Day wieder weltweites Ansehen. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "American Idiot" und "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wurden Welthits.

          Re: Green Day

As most Green Day fans know by now, it can be excruciating to wait for the next news, music, or sighting of the band. After American Idiot's release in September 2004, with its wealth of food for thought, fans feasted at the banquet of tours, personal appearances, youtube videos, and magazine articles for quite a while. When the furor began to die down and new information became scarce, the first new thought in most minds was, "When will the next album come out? What will it sound like? I want it now!" Of course, as always, some were more focused on the timeless question, "What color will Billie's hair be?" However, most fans felt it had been too long since they'd had a real meal and were ready for some good, meaty Green Day music to chew on. Now and then a thread would pop up in the Green Day Community asking if anyone had any news. The mood alternated between impatient and forlorn.

The first hint of information about Green Day's new album was in an October 2007 Rolling Stone interview with Billie Joe. At that time, BJ mentioned that he had about 45 new songs he'd been writing on the piano. However, there was no clear direction or timetable, so Green Day fans began to get the idea it was going to be a long wait.

[Mike and Jason White at the Phoenix FBHT show] During the following months, the band was active in many ways, none of which pointed directly to a new Green Day album. The Foxboro Hot Tubs CD and mini-tour as well as the new Pinhead Gunpowder release were tasty morsels, but only whetted our appetites for more. The new music from our favorite musicians started a frenzy of activity on the GDA and GDC. Rumor and speculation ran amok, including fictitious new album titles such as "Hillside Dance," "Coffee and Repent," and "Mind Bomb." [Billie Joe performing with Pinhead Gunpowder] However, none of these was substantiated, and nothing of real substance occurred until October 3, 2008, when the GDA was notified that a new Green Day album will be released in 2009. Several fans also received emails from Warner UK on that date with a link to sign up for updates. The exciting thread generated by that news is here. Although enthusiasm abounded, most Green Day fans know that, during the quiet times, there are more rumors than real news. At this point, not everyone was convinced that the news was legitimate.

[Shirley Manson on the Carson Daly show] On October 6, GDC regular and sleuth extraordinaire justcause found a video of the October 2 Carson Daly show where Garbage's Shirley Manson mentioned that Butch Vig (Garbage's drummer and an experienced producer) is busy producing Green Day. The pertinent part of that video can be viewed here. Later news included the information that Joe McGrath would assist with production. If you're unfamiliar with the work of Butch Vig and Joe McGrath, check out this thread on the GDC. Hope began to rise that new music would soon follow.

[Billie Joe working on the new album] On October 10, the incredible happened when netty found a video of Billie Joe working in a studio (with Butch Vig looking on). The video contains an intriguing teaser for a new song and begins with Billie Joe apparently playing the second guitar part. In the second section, Billie Joe and others are listening to playbacks with other instruments included. After watching closely for anything that appeared suspicious and verifying Butch's identity, the Green Day community began to believe that all the evidence seen lately is true news, generating a slew of posts and an impressive number of virtual kisses for netty! The next day, Netty also managed to find out that a new official Green Day web site was being planned for release soon.

October 14, just before midnight, brought another video for forum members to view, listen to, and discuss. This video is slightly longer and contains more varied content. It begins with Tre playing drums, shows an FM transmitter (displaying the possibly meaningful number 98.50) while some faint music plays, cuts to Jason Freese walking in and greeting the guys (as well as congratulating Mike on his new baby, Brixton, and making funny faces for the camera), and finishes up showing Mike playing bass in the studio with another appearance by Butch Vig. The exhilaration in the community reached new highs as members delighted in getting glimpses of the process of creating the new album. Not long afterwards, the studio in both youtube videos was identified as Ocean Way, the same studio where American Idiot was recorded.

[Tre on drums in the studio] [Jason Freese mugging for the camera] [Mike playing some bass in the studio]

The new Green Day web site hinted at in the first studio video was launched on October 20. It contains links for News, Tour information, Voter registration, Store, Music, Idiot Club, Ringtones, and Mailing List signup. The link causing the most discussion on the forum was the one to the Tour page, which contained the simple but meaningful statement "World-Wide Tour Coming Soon!" Most fans are aware that the new album will be released before the tour begins, so there is a great deal of speculation as to the meaning of the word "soon" as well as many members wondering what is meant by "world-wide."

[Home page of Green Day's new official web site]

The January issue of Alternative Press contained an article titled "Most Anticipated Albums of '09." [AP Magazine's January '09 Cover] Green Day had granted the magazine an exclusive interview in the studio, and the resulting article was the centerpiece of the '09 Albums feature. An ad for the magazine stated, "How does America?s biggest punk band top the politically charged, multi-platinum-selling American Idiot? Simple: They ratchet things up louder, prouder and even more defiantly. To the delight of the community, the Alternative Press article contained a great deal of news about the new album. The two main things that readers wished for but didn't get from the article were a title and a release date for the album. However, it was obvious that the famine was over, and it became easier to believe that more news would be coming soon.

One thing that the article did mention was the working titles of the album's three acts:

Act 1 - ?Heroes and Cons?
Act 2 - ?Charlatans and Saints?
Act 3 - "Horseshoes and Handgrenades"

Also included were song titles and brief descriptions for 7 songs - 6 from the first act and 1 from the second (no additional clues about the third act were forthcoming). See the scans of the AP article below for lots more detail. According to webmaster Andres, "The entire article has some really great descriptions of the work the guys have been doing and their feelings about it."

                      ...more to come...

In addition to the print article in Alternative Press, AP.com released a two-part online interview with Billie Joe in their "From the Editor's Floor" section. In the first part, Billie Joe talked about the process of creating the new album and said, "I'm pushing myself to be progressive in songwriting and being a songwriter. I come from a culture where I'm into great albums, and I still believe in that." He also discussed working with Butch Vig as producer after so many years with Rob Cavallo. Part Two of the interview talks about the relationship the band members have with each other and about music in general.

The month of January 2009 was frustrating for most Green Day fans, who kept expecting news to appear any day. Aside from many rumors (diligently squashed by our ever-watchful webmaster, Andres) and a blogger's interview with Butch Vig (posted in January but actually taken from a fall 2008 conversation) nothing was happening to satisfy our cravings. Finally, February brought some relief when the new web site posted a hint that something wonderful would be happening on "Sunday" (February 8). The news soon broke that Green Day would be presenters at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

                      [Green Day at 51st Grammys]

On Sunday evening, not long before the show started, the Idiot Club posted the news that the new album would be released in May 2009 and titled "21st Century Breakdown." Green Day fans all around the world watched the Grammy Awards ceremony waiting for a sight of Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre. We were rewarded when Green Day appeared to present the final award of the night - "Album of the Year."

The following day, February 9, brought this news [New Album Cover Art] from RollingStone.com's Rock & Roll Daily: "Rolling Stone will have a host of details on Billie Joe and Co.?s latest next week ? we joined the band in their San Francisco studio for a sneak peak at 21st Century Breakdown, and the full report will run in the next issue." One good thing followed another as February 10 brought a posting of the album cover art and a very short song teaser on the official Green Day web site, both of which were reported on the GDA news page. Then, on February 11, Rolling Stone kindly provided online readers with a sneak peek at some of the material from their upcoming article, which included two new song titles and the news that July will see the commencement of a "massive world tour."

Apparently, Green Day has allowed several members of the music press to preview the six songs reported by Rolling Stone. On February 12, EW.com (Entertainment Weekly) and MTV.com both reported hearing previews of the same six songs, and each of them provided some additional lyrics beyond what was reported by RS. Friday the 13th did not leave eager Green Day fans disappointed as Billboard.com published its own take on the 6 preview songs, titled, " Green Day Roars Back With 'Breakdown.'" Billboard's article also revealed more information about the world tour discussed earlier, informing readers that it will begin in North America in July and then head to Europe. The following year, 2010, will see Green Day touring in Japan, Southeast Asia, and South America and then returning home for more shows in North America. February 14 brought Green Day fans to a full week of getting new information every day as Spin.com announced their preview of the 6 previously reported songs from 21CB. The Spin folks also caught some new lyrics that weren't reported by the others.

So, to recap the preceding few paragraphs, in the one week beginning Sunday, February 8, Green Day fans not only learned the new album's title and month of release along with the month of the tour's kick-off, but also made gluttons of themselves with all the details released every day, including such treats as:

                      From RollingStone.com:

The songs are defiant, but also defiantly hopeful, referencing the unsettled political climate as well as more personal and generational turmoils.

                      From EW.com:

If you loved American Idiot, you will probably like this one, too.

"March of the Dogs": My favorite of the songs we heard, this one pairs pull-no-punches lyrics about organized religion with a propulsive backbeat. The hook reminded me of American Idiot's "Holiday," always a good thing.

                      From MTV.com:

...the songs packed a wallop ? both sonically and lyrically ? which is proof that, rather than hide from the prospect of trying to match Idiot's success, Green Day intend to face it head on.

Green Day cover a lot of ground, and they do it with a style and swagger that's admirable, especially given all the expectations weighing on them this time around. Taking cues from classic rock, going for the massive once again, they're not backing down from the fight.

                      From Billboard.com:

While not as overtly political as "American Idiot," the material sampled by Billboard is chock full of social commentary about religion, war and love.

"March of the Dogs" finds Green Day at its most structurally complex, weaving numerous short different ideas into a grand final product.

                      From Spin.com:

                      Our verdict? We love it.

                      "Know Your Enemy"
The song's fast pace and feverish guitar make this track sound like an outtake from the Dookie sessions.

                      "Before the Lobotomy"
Armstrong sings like you've never heard him before. Strumming an acoustic guitar, he hits all the high notes, as his lyrics lament a character in such pain his "misery [is] drenched in gasoline."
